Reminiscent of a Right Bank Bordeaux, this beautiful little red shows all sorts of character. Woody cranberry & raspberry on the nose. Plum skin, aniseed, pomegranate and cigar box on the palate, with a velvety texture and a full body. Excellent value. 93 Points - JZ Oct '18

A chef, a winemaker and an entrepreneur walk into a bar. Well, we can’t be sure the threesome behind this strapping South African red first hatched the idea to work together in a bar. Regardless of where this fortunate event took place, the results are truly something Marvelous.

This classic Rhone-style red comes from the minds of Adam Mason (award-winning winemaker of Mulderbosch), chef Peter Tempelhoff (perhaps South Africa’s top foodie) and the former financial genius behind Screaming Eagle. Each varietal was chosen based on that region in South Africa where it reaches its optimum complexity: Syrah from Stellenbosch and Grenache and Mourvedre from Piekenierskloof. Aged for 12 months in neutral wood so as to highlight the fruit’s purity and freshness, this killer red is packed with fruit and ready to drink now.

·    The Wine Advocate rates the 2014 vintage with 92 points or “Outstanding.”

·    Made by Yardstick Wines, a collaboration between Mulderbosch winemaker, Adam Mason, McGrath Collection chef, Peter Tempelhoff and Charles Banks, previously of Screaming Eagle.

·    In South Africa, GSMs are gaining popularity thanks to the success of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre blends from another Southern Hemisphere wine country—Australia.

·    Winemaker Adam Mason first gained a reputation as one of South Africa’s top talents in the business during his tenure at Klein Constantia, one of the country’s most award-winning wineries.

From the winery:

A medium to light bodied wine with plenty of complexity and intensity of flavour. There’s a real diversity of aromas; bright red berry fruits lead to savoury notes of cherry tobacco and forest floor, with good pepper spice.

From the winery:

A desire to produce affordable, freshly styled wines from the incredible diversity of vineyards across the Western Cape resulted in the creation of Marvelous Wines. (Dreaming a concept and seeing it to fruition is a Marvelous feeling).
First released in 2010 comprising a pair of red blends, the range now includes a white blend and a classic dry Rosé.

The wines are boldly labelled using a striking woodcut font that harks back to an era of artisanal printing techniques, much the same way in which each of these wines celebrates a classic winemaking style. (Celebrating tradition whilst embracing change is a Marvelous point of view).

Marvelous Wines to celebrate the spirit of wonder that has accompanied wine throughout the ages. We firmly believe that wine does not have to be over-complicated in order to be great. Rather the choice of occasion and selection of wine to accompany that occasion have the ability to turn an average experience into something great. (Don’t settle for ordinary, chose to be Marvelous!).

From the winery:

Neutral oak maturation and gentle extraction of tannins during winemaking have
imbued the palate with a firm, chalky texture providing the wine with real ‘cut’ and making it an excellent foil for rich meals, or simply enjoying with your favourite grilled meat.
